Friendship Is The True Meaning Of It - 894 Words

Friendship, something that we all have but something that we may not really understand the true meaning of it. During the reading Thoreau goes into detail of how friends are really not what we think them to be. We often don’t actually have friends but rather just acquaintances or companions. He goes on to explain who are real friends are and why they are our friends and that no one else really is. Thoreau states, â€Å"What is commonly called friendship even is only a little more honor among rogues† (p. 144). This brings attention to that a friendship is slightly more than someone who is dishonest to you. Your friend will only tell the truth once in a while. They do what they believe to be best for you. When we have friends we are only saying â€Å"they are not our enemy† (p. 143). Our friend may not always be someone we get along with greatly but someone whom we do not dishonor. We are not at war with them or out to make their lives inferior. We respect who they are and what they do but only because we are friends with them and not enemies. A friend should be treated â€Å"no better than I (they) should be†(p. 143) says Thoreau. If a man deserves to be treated as one who is disrespectful or dishonest then that is how they shall be treated. Can we consider our neighbors friends? We treat them the way the deserve to be treated because they living next to us. Some neighbors get along and are friends only because they are next to each other.
